The Best Pop Culture Halloween Costumes for 2021

Halloween jack-o-lanterns

Halloween is right around the corner, and if you’re someone who tends to be overenthusiastic about spooky season, then you likely had your costume picked out months ago. Or, you may be more of the type to leave things until the last minute when all the good costumes are cleaned out and you’re forced to wear cat ears and a black dress for the fifth year in a row (not that there’s anything wrong with that!). If you’re hoping to wear a new costume this year, we’ve put together the best pop culture Halloween costumes for 2021, which are creative, quick and fun.

2021 Halloween Costumes You’ll Actually Want to Wear

Whether you’re planning on ordering a costume online, buying one from a thrift shop, or putting one together yourself, there are plenty of fun costume ideas to suit your personal style.

Without further ado, here are five Halloween costume ideas apropos of 2021 (or, you know, whenever really).

1. Cruella de Vil

After the live-action movie featuring Emma Stone made a splash in theatres earlier this year, Cruella de Vil is one of the most popular Halloween costume ideas for 2021. We love the one pictured from fashion creator @doeneseya. All you’ll need is a dress, shawl or faux fur wrap, long gloves and a wig (and maybe a stuffed Dalmatian or two). Make it a green Halloween by picking up the items at your local thrift shop. If you can’t find a wig, you could also try adding a temporary gray streak using drug store products.

2. Daphne Bridgerton

Bridgerton may have taken Netflix by storm in 2020, technically, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still make an amazing Halloween costume inspired by Daphne Bridgerton. Again, you could try heading to your nearest thrift shop to find a dress and gloves similar to this baby blue number from the show, or get crafty and try making your own like @catherineincali did.

3. Olivia Rodrigo

With the massive success of the hit song “good 4 u,” there’s little doubt we’ll be seeing more than a few Olivia Rodrigo wannabes on Halloween night. All you’ll need to make this costume come to life is a cheerleading outfit and black gloves, and voila — you’re a pop star in the making.

4. Taylor Swift

As one of the most iconic pop stars of our time, Taylor Swift has quite a few recognizable looks you could pull inspiration from this Halloween. Instagrammer @thepaintedmeow took notes from Swift’s performance of “Shake It Off” during the 1989 tour by creating this whimsical green number.

5. Bob Ross

Bring some added calm to the Halloween event you’ll be attending by channeling your inner Bob Ross. Although he passed away nearly 20 years ago in 1995, the popular artist lives on in all our hearts, and dressing up as him this year is sure to bring a smile to everyone’s faces. Grab a curly wig, a palette and a blue denim shirt, and get ready to make some happy little accidents.
