About Paul

Paul Lawton is a sociologist, brand strategist, and “the most hated man in Canadian music.” Paul has lived a few lives. As a cultural ethnographer and former adjunct professor of sociology at the University of Lethbridge, Paul was an early voice in the research of the social uses of the Internet. He has run two independent Canadian record labels — Mammoth Cave Recording Co. and Pleasence Records, which have a combined discography of over 100 releases. Paul has played music and toured extensively in bands like The Ketamines, Tough Age, Century Palm, and Myelin Sheaths, putting out releases on labels in North America, Europe, and Japan. His critique of the Canadian music funding system made national headlines in 2013, which resulted in CBC labelling him “the most hated man in Canadian music.” He currently works in Toronto as a brand strategist in the cannabis industry.
