2021 Austin Black Pride Celebration Set for June 8-13

Published on June 3, 2021

Austin Black Pride, a 501 (c) 3 organization, was recreated in 2016 with queer people of color in mind. The founders of Austin Black Pride (ABP) saw that Austin was lacking in spaces and programming that catered to the unique needs of its Black LGBTQI+ community.

ABP was not created to further divide, bash, or belittle non-Black LGBTQI+ communities; but to instead preserve the culture and history, while also celebrating the evolution of Black LGBTQi+ folk.

This isn’t a once-a-year kind of pride, but instead, Austin Black Pride hosts and partners on a plethora of events throughout the year. If you are interested in working with them to put on an event, workshop, presentation, etc. please reach out to info@austinblackpride.org

Event Details for Austin Black Pride

(I’m)Perfectly Queer: Wednesday, June 9th at 6 noon, Location: The Little Gay Shop (828 Airport Blvd, Austin, TX 78702) (im)perfectly queer is a youth-led service project, Wealth and Wellness Day, that incorporates a mini-photo shoot, dinner + roundtable discussion. This event will unite QTBIPOC+ youth to have the opportunity to connect, collaborate and create impacting relationships with their peers as well as QTBIPOC+ groups and organizations.

Happy Hour Kick-Off: Friday, June 11th from 7 to 9 pm, Location: Tillery Bar and Kitchen (3201 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78702)

Capital City Ball: Coming to Austin Kiki Ball: Friday, June 11th from 9 to 4 am, Location: Highland Lounge (404 Colorado St, Austin, TX 78701) Born from the creativity, athleticism, and flamboyance of often disenfranchised Black and Latino gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth in New York City in the 1980s, ballroom culture has awakened into an increasingly recognizable influencer of broader pop culture and advocate for marginalized communities. A ball is an LGBTQ+ subculture in which people perform in competition – often referenced as walk – with other groups for trophies and prizes.Vogue Balls are unique in more ways than one. They provide an escape for trans women and Black/Latino MSM allowing them to creatively express their authentic identities. But they’ve also acted as an avenue for HIV-vulnerable communities by being able to link these communities to resources and care.

QTIP(Queers Talking in Private): Saturday, June 12th from 1 to 3 pm, Location Homewood Suites Downtown (78 East Ave, Austin, TX 78701) Queers Talking in Private is a dialogue that is met to be transformative and uplifting for QTBIPOC. In this respect, the Q stands for queer but we’re using it as a blanket term for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, asexual, intersex or genderqueer. We will take a deeper look at representation and its importance when dealing with issues of institutional bias and racism, economic opportunity, and access to resources. We’ll also explore how to best position our allies, and self-care during an era of uncertainty for queer people of color.

Trap Paint and Sip: Saturday, June 12th from 7 to 9:30 pm, Location Rain on 4th (217 W 4th St, Austin, TX 78701)
This event will feature an artist who assists guests in drawing off a particular image to an upbeat tempo. This event will feature Live Music and DJs, games, painting, and amazing soul food and BBQ.

Drip Drop: Saturday, June 12th from 9 pm to 2 am, Location: Elysium Austin (705 Red River St, Austin, TX 78701)
Nightclub event. Our partners Kind Clinic will be testing and doing outreach onsite at the venue. Our goal is to bring in a celebrity host as we’ve done in previous years to interact with the audience.

Yoga and Soundbath: Sunday, June 13th from 9 am to 12 pm, Location Givens Park Pavilion (3811 E 12th St, Austin, TX 78721) We are teaming up with local yogis and healing practitioners to offer a vinyasa flow and sound bath. A sound bath will bathe your body in sound waves and take your body, mind & spirit into a blissful state. After the practice is complete we will have healers available to interact within the realms of massage therapy, astrology, etc. Kind CLinic will also be present to support this event.Thirst Trap + #IssaRooftopKickback: Sunday, June 13th from 2 pm to 12 am, Location: The Coconut Club (310B Colorado St, Austin, TX 78701)

A stoplight day party – meaning red, yellow, or green wristbands will be distributed to denote one’s relationship status – and converting to #IssaRooftopKickback an open mic with a QTPOC marketplace. Thirst Trap is from 2 till 6 pm and #IssaRooftopKickback is from 8 pm to 12 am.
