Cardi B Drops by Her Former Bronx Middle School, Donates $100K

Cardi B surprised her former middle school with a generous donation. The “Bodak Yellow” rapper and songwriter returned to Alexander Macomb School in the Bronx on Sept. 13th, 2022 and pledged to donate $100,000 to support after-school programs. 

Cardi B Makes a Huge Donation to Fund After-School Programs 

In a video posted by Hot Freestyle, Cardi B told a crowd of kids at the school: “Let’s do something fun. Maybe a music program. Y’all like music programs? Y’all like to dance? Maybe you can have amazing after-school programs!” The crowd erupted into cheers.  

Cardi B was joined by New York City schools chancellor David C. Banks and K. Bain, the founder and executive director of Community Capacity Development, a nonprofit social justice organization.  

The School That Has a Special Place in Her Heart  

While at the school, the Grammy Award winner spoke about the importance of education and hard work and expressed the fundamental role the school played in her upbringing. 

“This school means a lot to me, more than any school I’ve ever been to,” she said in an Instagram video posted by Community Capacity Development. “The decisions you make now are very pivotal.”  

In a post on her own Instagram account, Cardi B wrote: “So, I was trying to do this last year but couldn’t because of all the COVID rules at the time. This middle school, IS 232 in the Bronx, has a very special place in my heart!! It turned me from an 11 year old girl into a little teenage adult. Kids in the Bronx have to grow up quickly do [SIC] to our circumstances and our environment. While some young teens like around 11-13 still live in that Disney world, these kids have to grow up fast and QUICK.”  

Holding Her Neighborhood Close to Her Heart 

Cardi B is admired for keeping the Bronx top of mind. She is often heard expressing her love for the New York City borough as she said it contributed to her creativity.  

The New York Post reported that she plans on visiting other schools in Queens and Brooklyn to reveal a special project she’s been working on for the last two years. 

Cardi B’s Generous Spirit  

Cardi B stands up for her community when it needs help. In January 2022, she pledged to pay the funeral and burial costs for the victims of an apartment building fire in the Bronx that killed 17 people on Jan. 9., 2022 – the deadliest blaze in New York City in decades.  

“I’m extremely proud to be from the Bronx and I have lots of family and friends who live and work there. So, when I heard about the fire and all of the victims, I knew I needed to do something to help,” Cardi B in a statement.
