YWCA Regina is challenging the community to step up against gender-based violence by stepping into red heels for Walk A Mile in Her Shoes 2021 presented by Avana. After an entirely virtual walk event last year, they are excited to announce a hybrid event for 2021 with virtual and in-person opportunities to get involved. Online registrations are now open to the public.
On Thursday, September 16, community members can gather in downtown Regina at City Square Plaza and don red shoes for a symbolic walk to raise awareness of gender-based and sexualized violence. This year, in addition to event day, registrants can choose to walk when they want, where they want, with whomever they want during walk week from September 13 to 16.
Walk A Mile in Her Shoes is a Fundraiser for Emergency Domestic Violence Shelters
Funds raised during Walk a Mile in Her Shoes directly benefit YWCA Regina’s Isabel Johnson Domestic Violence Shelter, one of only 3 emergency domestic violence shelters in the city. In 2020, over 207 women and 59 children found safety at the YWCA, but 408 women and children were turned away due to lack of space. Saskatchewan has the highest rate of intimate partner violence in Canada, nearly twice the national average according to Statistics Canada.
“We want folks to learn about and challenge the stark reality of domestic violence,” says YWCA Regina CEO Melissa Coomber-Bendtsen, “By walking that symbolic mile in her shoes, community members can stand up as allies and advocates, changing the story for women and families.”
YWCA Regina is also pleased to announce Avana as their presenting sponsor for Walk a Mile in Her Shoes 2021.
